Akagera COCAMU, from the Kirehe District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, is our current pick for the best espresso bean of the 2015 harvest. With a syrupy, honey-sweet body, cinnamon spiciness that comes out strong in both pour-overs and espresso, and notes of caramel and chocolate, this is definitely one of our most recommended coffees for the year.
We visited the COCAMU cooperative in March-April 2015. COCAMU has been in operation as a washing station since 2007, and collects coffee cherries from over 700 smallholder farmers annually, almost half of which are women. The cooperative provides fertilizer to its members to help improve coffee quality, and also maintains a health insurance program to promote access to medical care.
